About

Detroit Specials provides the self-publishing support you need, when you need it.

I Do:

  • Offer clients the chance to purchase services at any stage of the self-publishing process.
  • Ensure that any images or fonts used in my book covers are properly licensed. You’ll never have to worry about graphics rights infringements.
  • Give my clients project updates at every stage. I always answer emails, and I always pick up the phone (or call right back).
  • Offer classes for anyone who wants to learn how to publish their books themselves.
  • Offer specific marketing guidance and support.

I Don’t:

  • Take royalties. Ever. You pay me for my work, and that’s it. You retain all rights to your book and you receive all royalties.
  • Sell one-size-fits-all “marketing packages.” Ever. I tailor all marketing efforts to your book.
  • Hit you with surprise charges. If a project entails more work than originally estimated, I will do everything possible to keep your cost within that original estimate. If that just isn’t possible or if the scope of a project changes – for example, you send me significant changes after I start work – I’ll give you a new estimate before starting any work not explicitly covered by the original estimate. You’ll know how much your project will cost at every step in the process.

3 Ways to Get Started:

1. Skip the sessions

Check out the price list and choose the services you need. You can mix and match services to suit your preferences and budget. Contact me with your list and any questions. I’ll respond within two business days.

2. Attend an 2-hour introductory workshop

5-person minimum, $25.00 each

  • Learn the essential steps you need to take to self publish successfully.
  • Find out how Detroit Specials can help you produce your book.
  • Get one free year of our subscription services: access to our list of reviewers and other marketing opportunities, Detroit Specials service discounts, and more.
  • Each session includes 1 hour for Q&A and discussion after the presentation.

3. Contact me for a consult

One-on-one session, $50 & up

Workshops can be overwhelming and may not address all of your questions, so I also offer more personal consultations. Just contact me using the form below; let me know who you are and a little about your book. I will get back to you within one business day to set up a consultation.

The session will last for approximately an hour. I’ll ask to see the first 1,000 words of your work in progress (if available) before we meet. I’ll also ask a few questions about your plans for your book(s) so we can spend our time together as productively as possible. The cost for a consultation is $50 up to 75 minutes, and $25 for each hour or part of an hour after that. Everyone who completes a consultation receives one free year of our subscription service and a 5% discount off of the cost of our services for one year from the date of the consultation.

Working with Detroit Specials

Once I understand what you need, I’ll draft a Client Agreement (CA) and will send it to you. This document will protect both of us in case of a dispute. When you’ve signed the CA and returned it to me I will send you an invoice for your deposit. The deposit is typically 50% of the estimated cost. I will begin work on an agreed-upon date after I receive the deposit.

Above all else, I want to help you produce the best possible book. If your needs fall outside my areas of expertise, I will be happy to refer you to another professional.
